Hair Advice at Your Fingertips!

How to deep condition hair?

What is deep conditioning, how to know whether I really need it, and if yes, how to deep condition my hair?

Dry hair can be caused by the lack of moisture and vitamins, abuse of chemical products, excessive sun exposure, frequent use of a hair dryer and curling tongs, heredity.

To avoid this problem, drink more water, eat fruits and vegetables, take multivitamin complexes, and also include more fish bringing natural fats into your diet. But in addition, for the treatment of brittle, unruly, and damaged hair you can regularly do a procedure of deep conditioning. There is a salon treatment that prevents split ends, saturates hair with nutrients, giving it a healthy shine. It also makes the hair structure smoother, by filling and closing the scales, and deeply nourishes and moisturizes the locks.

Deep conditioning gives your hair a more intense hydrating treatment than a normal conditioner. To get scientific, unlike normal conditioners, deep conditioners contain smaller molecules that are able to penetrate the hair shaft at the time in which it’s left on the hair. This is why deep conditioners are designed to be left on for a longer period. During this time active ingredients are absorbed, and because of their high pH level is higher than our hair, the cuticles respond by softening and opening up allowing ease for ingredients to penetrate the hair cortex. But you MUST read the label. If the deep conditioner says ‘leave on and rinse after 30 minutes’ – do that, don’t assume that leaving on for longer or overnight will be an even better treatment. You can accidentally overload your hair this way or give yourself scalp issues. @sophiemariecurly

In salons, this procedure is performed with the help of special formulations for hair treatment. But you can also achieve almost the same result at home, by using nourishing masks and oils and following these simple rules.

How to deep condition hair at home?

– First of all, you need to choose a deep-acting conditioner that contains such ingredients, as vitamins, natural oils and extracts, silicon, and proteins.

– Wash the hair with shampoo.

– When the locks are still slightly wet, apply a generous amount of conditioner on them, starting from the roots and thoroughly distributing the product along the entire length of the hair to the tips. You can use a wide tooth comb to apply the conditioner evenly. But comb your hair gently and be careful not to damage it.

– Wrap your head with cling film first and then with a towel on top.

– Now it’s important to provide the necessary temperature that can help the conditioner to penetrate into the hair structure deeply – for this, use a hair dryer to warm up the towel.

– Leave this “construction” on your head for about 30-45 minutes so that the conditioner can moisturize the hair shaft deeply. The longer it stays on the hair, the better the result will be.

– Rinse your hair with warm water first to clear it from the conditioner (without using shampoo). Then rinse it with cooler water – this will help to close the cuticles and make the hair smoother.

– Use a towel to sop up extra water from your hair.

– As the final step, apply your favorite moisturizing spray, oil or serum that makes your hair more manageable, and let it air dry – naturally, without a hair dryer.

This simple treatment gives a visual effect after the first application. Hair becomes shinier, smoother, heavier, and more elastic. The procedure also has a cumulative effect. So, if you do a deep conditioning treatment once a week for two months, you can significantly improve the structure and appearance of your hair.
