Hair Advice at Your Fingertips!

Does rice water grow your hair?

Have heard a lot about rice water benefits for hair recently. Does it really help? If yes, how do I use rice water in my hair? Tnx!

Regular use of rice water has many benefits for hair – it helps to remove dandruff, strengthen the strands, stimulate their growth, give vitality, and significantly improve their appearance.

The composition of rice water is rich in vitamins, especially B and C.

It also contains trace elements – potassium, iodine, magnesium, zinc, selenium, manganese and a lot of fiber.

This is a real treasure trove of nutrients that nourish the follicles and repair damaged cells.

Due to the fact that rice water has antioxidant properties, it helps to get rid of toxins that could accumulate in the scalp, thereby preventing premature alopecia and gray hair.

Rice Water Recipes: Soaked, Boiled, Fermented

How to make rice water for hair at home? There are 3 most popular and effective ways, you can try all of them and choose the one you like the most. You’ll need only two ingredients!

Soaked rice water for hair:

  • take 1 cup of uncooked rice;
  • rinse it thoroughly;
  • add 2-3 glasses of water;
  • leave for 30 minutes;
  • strain the rice water into a clean bowl.

This method will appeal to those who are very busy and don’t have much time.

Boiled rice water for hair:

  • take ½ cup of rice;
  • add 1 glass of water;
  • cook the rice in boiling water;
  • strain the rice water into a clean bowl before use.

This is a concentrated liquid that you can dilute before rinsing the hair. The concentration of dilution depends on the hair length and greasiness. Usually, it’s 1:10. The oilier the hair is, the lower the concentration should be.

Fermented rice water for hair:

  • take 2 cups of rice;
  • add 2 times more water to it;
  • leave the rice to soak for 20-30 minutes;
  • pour the water into a glass bottle, seal it and leave in a dark place at room temperature for 2 days;
  • when a sour smell appears, stop fermentation and put it in a fridge to preserve all the beneficial properties obtained during fermentation.

Fermentation reduces the pH level of rice water to the pH level of the hair and nourishes it better due to the effective penetration of vitamins into the scalp and hair structure.

You can also use diluted rice water as a conditioner. Apply it to wet clean hair, massage the scalp slightly and rinse after 5-10 minutes. For additional nourishment, you can add a few drops of essential oil, such as rosemary, lavender or geranium.

To make a shampoo, mix rice water and flour together and let it brew for 5-10 minutes. Use it as a stand-alone product or in a 1:1 ratio with your regular shampoo.

Remedy for curly hair

Curly hair is usually dry and brittle. The protein containing in rice water penetrates deeply and improves the condition of the hair, making it bouncy and behaving. There is no need to use rice water as a leave in, 15-30 minutes will be enough for useful elements to soak into the hair and remain in it even after washing off.

Side Effects of Rice Water on Hair

As for the external use of rice water, there are no contraindications. However, this decoction can have a drying effect. Therefore, women with dry scalp should not overuse it. Anyway, it’s recommended to use rice water for hair no more than once/twice a week. Also, remember that you can store rice water in the refrigerator for a week. Shake it well before use.

      Hello! Please do not use coconut oil on your hair. I know it is really popular and that coconut oil is good for you but coconut oil can actually do damage over time to your hair. Oil molecules are larger than water molecules. Also, oil molecules demand the water molecules so the cortex doesn’t receive moisture from the water- therefore that dries out the hair. And when the oil molecules suck up the water the molecule swells, causing the cortex to crack and break. Now this applies to many oils, except olive oil. Olive oils don’t demand the water and won’t swell the cortex. Rice water should be safe, but I do not suggest putting in the coconut oil. I would supplement the coconut oil with olive oil. I don’t know about lime juice or aloe vera (I wouldn’t use them on your hair unless you have good research to back up their benefits) but I would say that the rice water and olive oil is good for your hair. Also, one of the reasons we know olive oil is so good is because most of our test hair and hair that is used in cosmetology school is Mediterranean hair (their diets tend to lead to great skin and hair because of the olive oil, protein, seafood, vegetables, etc.)

    The practice of using rice water as a hair treatment is by no means new. Researchers date the beauty ritual back to ancient Japan when court ladies living during the Heian period would saturate their hair in fermented rice water (also called Yu-Su-Ru) to stimulate growth. The process has resurfaced on YouTube with influencers and bloggers seeping rice water for up to three days to ferment it at home. After the rice has soaked, it’s strained from the water and the liquid is used to saturate the hair as a rinse-out or leave-in treatment. But should we swap out our hair gummies for grains in hopes of growing out the bob we chopped this fall?

      I use rice water for hair growth, and after about 3 months I saw significant improvement! I use it every time I wash my hair, and it’s become much stronger and has also started to grow. Definitely recommend this method to anyone having trouble growing out their hair! As for how often, I’d say every time you wash your hair, but at least 2-3 times a week!

    Rice water helps in decreasing the hair fall and promote hair growth. The amino acid present in the water helps in the regeneration of hair and makes them grow faster.

    I’ve used it a few timed for my straight, baby fine, thinning, long hair and most definitely do see an improvement with added fullness and more texture. I will continue to rinse my hair with rice water to see even more positive results. Yay! I boil plain white rice with extra water than recipe calls for and drain the water off. Keep in the fridge for a week or so. I shampoo rinse and pour on the rice water. Massage it in gently, let it set for a few minutes and rinse it out. Dry my hair as usual. Major change in my hairs fullness and texture. Looks thicker.

    I have curly, brittle hair so after shampooing I use a good conditioner & add castor oil to it to add moisture to my hair. Should I put the rice water in after rinsing the conditioner out or skip the conditioner and just use rice water? I’m worried that if I skip my conditioner my hair will be brittle even with the rice water. Thanks.

      Use the rice water about 30 to 45mins before washing your hair. Then you can make use of your conditioner. It goes like this: mosturise (you can use water for that with the help of a spray bottle), cover your hair with a plastic bag, wash off after about 45mins, condition.
